Sub-Saharan migrants take notes on the path to follow to cross the border with France, aided by a map that some volunteers have posted on the wall in the self-managed squat of Lakaxita. Irun (Basque Country). September 4, 2018. As the number of migrants arriving on the coasts of southern Basque Country increased, more and more migrants are heading north to the border city of Irun to try to cross the border with France and continue on their way. French authorities have reacted by placing police controls at all borders and causing many migrants to seek alternative route and methods to cross the border and to continue their journey to other European countries. In Irun, the Basque municipality on the border with Hendaye, group of volunteers has created a host network to serve migrants and inform about the public services they are entitled to and the ways they could use to cross the border.
