A woman turns her back as a sign of protest against the participation of women as members the traditional 'Alarde de San Marcial' parade through the streets. Irun (Basque Country). June 30, 2023. The alarde is a parade that commemorates a military victory against the French army in 1522. This parade was traditionally male-only until the mid-1990s, when a group of women claimed their right to participate on equal terms with men. Since then, two parades have been held, one public in which men and women participate together, and the other private, organized by a private group, which, relying on tradition, does not allow women to parade and only men can participate.
