The major of Hondarribia, Aitor Kerejeta, representing the local council, carries the baton on the "19th Korrika", pursued by a crowd of runners. Hondarribia (Basque Country) March 22, 2015. The "Korrika" is a relay course, with a wooden baton that passes from hand to hand without interruption, organised every two years in a bid to promote the basque language. The 19th Korrika will run over 11 days and 10 nights, crossing many Basque villages and cities, totalling some 2300 kilometres. Some people consider it an honour to carry the baton with the symbol of the Basques, “buying” kilometres to support Basque language teaching. The "Korrika" this year ends in Bilbao on March 29.
