Barracks of the Civil Guard in Intxaurrondo where Mikel Zabalza was killed in 1985
. Dosnostia - San Sebastian (Spain) November 30, 2024. Mikel Zabalza was arrested by the Civil Guard on November 30, 1985, and after being brutally tortured in the barracks of Intxaurrondo, he was killed, and his body was found in the Bidasoa River twenty days later. Basque Government acknowledged Zabalza as a victim of police brutality in 2022, as did the Government of Navarre in May of 2024; the Spanish Government, on the other hand, maintains the official version established almost 40 years ago; which states that he escaped when he was taken to check an ETA weapons depot and he drowned in the Bidasoa.
