July 6, 2023. In January 2021, prefecture of the the Pyrénées-Atlantiques ordered the closure of eight border crossings, including the Avenida pedestrian bridge between Irun and Hendaye. The barriers were removed on Monday (July 4) to allow the Tour de France to pass, but it was closed again on Tuesday morning (July 5) due to anti-terrorism measures. The convening associations insist that the sole objective of closing is to prevent the passage to migrants coming from the southern border of Europe, pushing migrants to explore more dangerous alternative routes.
